Sandi’s Story

Like many others who race, my story is personal because of members of my family who are either survivors or who have lost their battles. I started doing this race almost from the beginning because of my paternal grandmother, for whom I was named. She died of breast cancer before I was born, in her early 50s. Over the years, many friends have been diagnosed, some have survived, and sadly, some have lost their fight. In the last year, I had a cousin on my mother’s side who was diagnosed. Thankfully, she caught it early, and her prognosis was/is great. I am not a breast cancer survivor in that sense (I am, however, an 8-year thyroid cancer survivor), but I am a warrior, nonetheless. I race for those whom I have lost, and those whose fight still goes on.   ~Sandi
